Fitch boys shatter javelin record at Ledyard Relays

Ledyard - Fitch High School broke a 35-year-old meet record in the javelin relay on Saturday during the annual Ledyard Relays track and field meet.

Tyler Latham, Robert Johnston and Devante Anderson teamed up for a combined distance of 508 feet, 10 inches, shattering the old meet record of 482-3½ set by Fitch in 1979. Latham won the event with a throw of 177-10 while Johnston was second (170-2) and Anderson fourth (160-10).

The Falcons also won the high jump relay (17 feet, 4 inches) with John Floyd (6-0), Zach Higgins (5-8) and Vernon Powe (5-8) finishing 1-2-3, while Fitch's Raheem Ivy won the triple jump (41-5½) and finished second in the long jump (18-8½).

Host Ledyard and Montville also had productive days in the boys' portion of the meet. The Colonels won two relays and had a pair of individual winners while the Indians had two individual winners and added a relay win. The only other local winner was Waterford's 4x100-meter relay team of Rolando Rivera, Bishme Sheppard, Anthony Jordan and Julio Gil-Martinez, which won in 45.3 seconds.

For Ledyard, Joe Carter won the long jump (20-0), Bryce Hedman captured the 3,200 (10:02.5), the sprint medley relay team of Carter, Hedmen, JoJo Shumaker and Joe Brooks won in 3:42.9 and the long jump relay of Carter, Michael Lopes and Khary Childs went 56-½.

Montville's wins were by Nick Strickland in the 300 hurdles (44.8), Dan Linkenhoker in the 5,000 (17:12) and the distance medley relay team of Linkenhoker, Kevin Fitzgerald, Chase Lewis and Caleb Shelton (11:50.4).

East Lyme had a big day in the girls' portion of the race, winning a pair of individual events and four relays. Jenna Schumacher won the javelin (106-1) and teamed with Kristen Foster and Cara Lang to win the javelin relay (274-4) while Shawn Dousis won the pole vault (8-0) to lead a 1-2-3 sweep with Kara Santamaria and Taylor Winder (both cleared 7-6) and win the pole vault relay (23-0).

The Vikings also won the high jump and long jump relays. Gianna Folze, Janelle Wheaton and Haley Ashton combined to clear 13-6 in the high jump while Wheaton, Samantha Seibel and Chelsea Stevens combined to go 43-10½ in the long jump.

In addition, St. Bernard's Ali Regan won the triple jump (32-10) and teamed with Erica Massad and McKenzie Nagy to win the triple jump relay (93-2), while Ledyard's Chenoa Sebastian won the 300 hurdles (47.3) and Fitch's Sydnee Spruill won high jump (5-0).

Other local second-place finishers in the boys' meet were Fitch's Miggy Gamboa (300 hurdles, 45.3), Ledyard's Brandon Chesnut (shot put, 44-2), Fitch's 4x800 relay (8:36.9), 4x400 relay (3:40.7) and 440 shuttle hurdle relay (1:12.0), East Lyme's 4x1,600 relay (19.49), sprint medley relay (3:49.8) and triple jump relay (103-4), and Waterford's high jump relay (14-10). Thirds went to Chesnut (discus, 124-6), St. Bernard's distance medley relay (12:05.8), Waterford's sprint medley relay (3:58.1), Ledyard's shot put relay (119-1) and East Lyme's long jump relay (48-6½).

Other local second-place finishers in the girls' meet were Montville's Kiah Strickland in the 300 hurdles (49.2) and long jump (15-5½), Fitch's Makada King (discus, 91-0), Ledyard's Ari Fustini (javelin, 102-9), East Lyme's 4x100 relay (53.7), sprint medley relay (4:33.4) and shot put relay (88-2½), Fitch's 4x1,600 relay (25:09), 4x100 weight relay (1:01.6) and discus relay (240-6), and Montville's 4x400 relay (4:23.5), distance medley relay (14:09.1), javelin relay (240-10) and long jump relay (437-5) . Thirds went to Montville's Strickland (javelin, 100-3) and Caitlin Turney (300 hurdles, 50.0), East Lyme's Folz (high jump, 4-10) and Schumacher (shot, 30-8¾), Ledyard's Sebastian (long jump, 15-5), East Lyme's 4x400 relay (4:26.4), Ledyard's pole vault relay (17-6) and Montville's discus relay (213-6).
