New London – The fire marshal’s office is investigating the cause of a fire that city firefighters found burning inside the bathroom ceiling of a three-family home at 40 Montauk Ave. early Monday morning.
The fire was reported at about 4 a.m. after a second-floor resident smelled smoke coming from the first floor and alerted neighbors, according to fire inspector Vernon Skau.
The fire was contained to a confined area between the first-floor bathroom and second-floor floor joist. Firefighters tore into the first-floor ceiling to access the fire.
No injuries were reported.
Skau said the cause of the fire remains under investigation, and the origin appears to be in the vicinity of a bathroom exhaust fan.
