Groton — Town police on Tuesday charged a pair of New London residents allegedly caught in the act of burglarizing a vehicle in the parking lot of the Groton dog park.

Groton Detective Lt. John W. Varone said at the time of the arrest, police were in the middle of an investigation into a series of larcenies from motor vehicles. The area, located at the Copp Property off Gold Star Highway, was under surveillance by detective and officers.

As a result of the surveillance, police arrested Jose J. Garcia, 39, and Sophia Torres, 37, both of 37 Linden St. in New London. Garcia was charged with third-degree burglary, sixth-degree larceny and risk of injury to a minor. Torres was charged with accessory to third-degree burglary, accessory to sixth-degree larceny and risk of injury to a minor.

The risk of injury charges stem from the fact that during the commission of crime, Garcia and Torres had a 5-year-old child with them, according to police. The child was turned over to family members.

Both were held in lieu of a $25,000 bond and scheduled for arraignment Wednesday in New London Superior Court. Police said Torres is also wanted by the Waterford Police Department on an outstanding criminal warrant.

Varone said the investigation is continuing and more arrests are expected. As a simple crime prevention measure, police suggest always locking car doors and storing valuables out of sight.
