Devin Carney nominated for 23rd House District

Devin Carney of Old Saybrook secured the Republican nomination for state representative for the 23rd House District at a nominating convention in Westbrook on Wednesday.

The 23rd District covers Lyme, Old Lyme, Old Saybrook and Westbrook.

The Westbrook, Old Saybrook and Lyme delegations nominated Carney while the Old Lyme delegation nominated Vicki Lanier of Old Lyme.

Lanier, a lawyer and former treasurer on the Lyme-Old Lyme Board of Education, announced on Wednesday her intention to primary in August.

Carney, a real estate broker and the grandson of actor Art Carney, said he hopes to lower taxes, reduce spending and help businesses to improve the quality of life for seniors and younger generations.

“I want to go to Hartford to change the course we are on and improve society for the future,” he said in a phone interview.

State Rep. Marilyn Giuliano, R-Old Saybrook, who currently holds the 23rd District seat but will retire after this term, gave the nominating speech.

“I believe Devin will work for all of us with energy and integrity, and with an interest not in politics, but public service,” she said in a phone interview in which she reiterated her remarks.

In a press release, Lanier offered her congratulations to Carney and reflected on an anecdote about how 12 years ago, “a strong candidate named Marilyn Giuliano, who lost the convention, felt compelled to let the full membership of the Republican Party make a choice about who would be the best qualified to not only defeat the Democratic opponent, but most importantly, effectively serve the people of the 23rd district.”

“I am confident that the voters in the Republican Party will choose a candidate equally equipped with the life experience, professional skill set, energy, and proven track record to be our next representative,” she said.
