Groton — Town police arrested a 16-year-old Norwich youth on larceny and weapons charges Friday after pursuing him by car and on foot following his alleged involvement in a hit-and-run accident.
At about 2:45 p.m., an officer attempted to stop a vehicle believed to have been involved in the accident when the vehicle fled on Poquonnock Road in the area of the Groton Shoppers Mart.
The accident had occurred in another shopping center.
The officer pursued the vehicle, which entered another shopping area, where the driver jumped from the moving vehicle and fled on foot. Numerous residents pointed out the suspect’s direction, helping police locate him in the restroom of a business, where police took him into custody.
The suspect’s vehicle, which came to rest after striking a parked vehicle, had been stolen from the scene of a residential burglary in Norwich, police said.
Officers discovered a loaded shotgun in the stolen vehicle. The weapon, which also had been stolen, had not been taken from the residence that was burglarized, police said.
The suspect, who was not named because of his age, was charged with criminal possession of a firearm, possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle, third-degree larceny by possession, sixth-degree larceny by possession, interfering with an officer, engaging an officer in pursuit, evading responsibility, reckless driving and driving without a license.
Due to the seriousness of the charges, the suspect was transferred to the Juvenile Detention Center in Hartford.
