Ferry crew to be honored for role in girl’s rescue

New London - State Rep. Ernest Hewett, D-New London, along with local officials will recognize the captain and crew of the Cross Sound Ferry John H. and others tonight who helped rescue a 12-year-old city girl from the mouth of the Thames River on May 4.

The recognition will take place at 7 p.m. in City Hall.

A girl ended up in the cold water after her aluminum canoe capsized at the entrance to New London Harbor.

The crew of the John H. saw the canoe capsize, found the girl and threw her life rings and pulled her to the side of the ferry until the Coast Guard rescued her. She was in the water for 15 to 20 minutes. The girl, who had a dog in the canoe with her, was treated and released at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital. The dog swam roughly three-quarters of a mile back to shore.
