Art Center Killingworth Offers Variety of June Programs

Intro to Digital Photography: Sunday, June 1 from 1 to 4 p.m. Explore digital photography topics including exposure, shutter speed, white balance and depth-of-field, camera settings, and gear. Learn basic digital editing, printing, and online sharing techniques. Conclude with field practice on the Arts Center grounds (weather permitting). Fee: $70.

Light Painting Photography: Friday, June 13 from 7 to 10 p.m. Learn to use long exposures to paint with light inside a single photo. Explore various lighting techniques, forms, exposure lengths, color balances, designs, and more. Review the basics: aperture, shutter speed, white balance, depth-of-field, camera settings, and gear. Bring a camera with a bulb setting, tripod, and a shutter release cable, plus bright light sources such as flashlights and LED swords. Conclude with field practice on the Arts Center grounds (weather permitting). Fee: $70.

Encaustic I: Saturday, June 15 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. In this hands-on intensive, explore the luminous beauty and versatility of the encaustic medium-painting with molten, pigmented beeswax. Learn techniques to build layers, texture, fuse, stencil, embed objects, incise, image transfer, and collage. Open to all levels. Fee: $125 plus $35 material fee.

Encaustic Painting II: Texture Galore!: Saturday, June 21 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Learn to control encaustic paint and really make it work for you in Level II. Apply wax for a smooth finish and add texture and dimension with textiles. Develop further texture with the dry brush technique, build up surface (accretion), fill crevices, scrape, incise/carve, stencil, and more. Fee: $135 plus $35 material fee.

Art of Chinese Calligraphy: Sunday, June 22 from 1 to 4 p.m. No experience required. Gain the basic techniques of Chinese calligraphy, a 6,000-year-old art form, as you learn to read and write the top 10 Chinese symbols (such as Love, Peace, Happy, and Healthy ). Take home a finished artwork of your own, written on traditional rice paper, ready to frame and display. All materials included. Fee: $60.

Eternal Summer: Folding the Origami Lily: Sunday, June 22 from 1 to 3 p.m. Celebrate summer in this fun workshop. Learn to fold an origami lily. Create several flowers (and beautiful paper leaves), enough for a lovely and lasting bouquet. Open to beginners as well as more experienced folders. Fee: $25 plus $5 material fee.
