Norwich — The Norwich Republican Town Committee unanimously endorsed political newcomer Robert Dempsky for the 46th state House of Representatives seat that covers the southern and urban sections of Norwich.
Dempsky, 40, a poker dealer at Mohegan Sun casino for the past six years, said he has always been interested in politics on the national and state level. He said “the straw that broke the camel’s back” was the passage of the state’s strict gun control law in 2013 in the aftermath of the mass shootings of 26 young students and teachers at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown.
Dempsky also joined the RTC just prior to being nominated Wednesday.
Dempsky will challenge first-term incumbent Democrat Emmett Riley, who was seeking endorsement for re-election Wednesday by the Democratic Town Committee.
Because the 46th District is a single-municipality district, the town committees endorse the candidates through a caucus rather than a convention.
The Republican Town Committee also unanimously endorsed Dianne Slopak to run for a second term as Norwich’s Republican registrar of voters.
