Bozrah — Democrats on Monday nominated Rep. Kevin Ryan for a 12th term representing the state’s 139th District.
Ryan, whose district includes Bozrah, Montville and part of Norwich, is a deputy speaker in the General Assembly and was the House chairman of the Labor and Public Employees Committee for eight years.
He lives in the Oakdale section of Montville and was chairman of the town’s Board of Education for six years. He attended Montville public schools and St. Bernard High School and is a member of several local organizations.
Ryan, who holds a doctorate degree in optometry, has been an adjunct faculty member at the University of New Haven since 1980. He teaches physics.
Jonathan Gilman of Bozrah was endorsed by the 139th District Republican convention, but Gilman said he is only a “placeholder” on the ballot until another candidate comes forward. Gilman said he did not want to leave the ballot spot vacant, but said it’s “doubtful” he would run if no other candidate comes forward.
Gilman told the Norwich Republican Town Committee Wednesday that he is soliciting interest from other candidates to run against Ryan.
