Waterford — Plainfield High School, which was voted into a share of the state's No. 1 ranking with Montville on Monday, won't be staying in that spot very long.

The Panthers, who suffered their first defeat of the season to East Lyme on Monday, 3-2 in nine innings, were beaten for the first time in the Eastern Connecticut Conference Medium Division on Tuesday night when 10th-ranked Waterford rode a three-hitter by Adam Goss to a 2-0 victory.

Despite its second straight defeat, Plainfield (15-2, 8-1) can still win the Medium Division outright by defeating Montville in a winner-take-all game for the title on May 27 at Plainfield.

Kevin Johnson led the Lancers (13-4, 7-3) with three hits and an RBI while Connor Lewis drove in Waterford's other run with a double.

In other games:

• Chad Mooney pitched a complete game and was 2-for-3 with two RBI for Montville in a 7-0 victory over Stonington in the ECC Medium Division. Steve Rogers added two hits, two RBI and a run scored for Montville (16-1, 8-1), which is tied for the No. 1 spot in the state poll. Kale Gilbert was 2-for-3 for Stonington (2-16, 1-9).

• Quantique White had three hits, two runs and an RBI and pitched a complete game with sevens strikeouts as New London beat Killingly 8-4 in the ECC Medium Division and kept its state tournament hopes alive. Damon LaFrance had three hits, two runs and an RBI for the Whalers (7-10, 4-6) and White improved to 4-0.

• Andy Grant had four hits, including two doubles and a triple, with two runs and two RBI as Norwich Free Academy blanked Lyman Memorial 8-0. Chance Gendron had two hits and scored for the Wildcats (11-8) and Zach Podurgiel pitched a six-hitter.

• Willie Rios pitched a two-hitter to improve to 5-0 as St. Bernard defeated Fitch at Dodd Stadium. Cooper Robinson had both hits for the Falcons (8-10), including a double in the first inning that led to Fitch's only run (he later scored on a wild pitch). The Saints (12-6) also scored their runs in the first inning and had their only two hits off Dan Mewha. Anthony Malchiodi led off the game with a single and eventually scored on a base hit by Rios. Rios came around to score later in the inning on Matt Thomas' fielder's choice.

• Jordan Kowalski had three hits, including a double and three RBI, as Ledyard defeated Griswold 11-5. Anthony Viteritto added a single and double for Ledyard (12-5), while Andrew Byrd singled twice to make a winner of pitcher Trevor Bolduc.
