Truck fire on I-95 in Groton quickly extinguished

Groton — A fully involved truck fire Saturday afternoon on Interstate 95 just north of the Gold Star Memorial Bridge at the side of highway’s southbound lanes forced the closure of one lane for about 15 minutes.

Ray Hart, acting captain of the Groton City Fire Department, said the fire at about 4 p.m. took only about 2 to 3 minutes to extinguish. The engine and passenger areas of the half-ton pickup truck were heavily damaged, and the truck was a total loss, he said.

The Poquonnock Bridge Fire Department also responded to the blaze. State police said Saturday night that the scene already had been cleared.
