Tractor-trailer collision closes I-95 in Stonington, injures two

Stonington — A section of Interstate 95 in Stonington was closed for five hours early Saturday after a tractor-trailer carrying used tires collided with a tractor-trailer carrying fresh produce, causing it to catch fire, according to state police.

The accident occurred in the northbound lanes between Exits 90 and 91 at 4:11 a.m.

According to a news release from Troop E in Montville, the occupants of the second tractor-trailer, Robert A. Ward, 44, and Thomas Reid, 57, both of Springfield, Mo., were taken to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital. Ward, the driver, suffered an incapacitating injury and was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital by Life Star helicopter.

The highway was completely closed for several hours for cleanup of debris. The left lane was open as of 9:15 a.m. and both lanes were open as of 11:30 a.m.
