Hearing tonight in Stonington on extended payments for sewer hookups

Stonington - The Water Pollution Control Authority will hold a public hearing tonight on a proposal to implement an extended payment plan for sewer hookup charges. The hearing will begin at 6 p.m. at the police station.

Property owners could pay the entire fee or spread it out over seven years at an interest rate of prime plus 1 percent.

WPCA Chairman Jim Sisk said the plan came from a suggestion from a number of people including a developer.

Sisk said the authority felt it was a "win-win" situation for all parties as long as it applied to everyone from businesses to homeowners.

He said an average hookup fee for a home can range from $5,000 to $10,000 and be as much as $20,000 depending on lot size and other factors. Sisk said the authority will discuss the hearing comments and then likely vote on the plan at its 6:30 p.m. meeting that follows the hearing.
