Firefighters work on the charred front of the house at 265 Upper Pattagansett Road in East Lyme Wednesday, where a fire spread from the kitchen to the rest of the house.

East Lyme – A single-story home at 265 Upper Pattagansett Road was completely destroyed by a fire late this morning.

Fire Marshal Richard Morris said the fire was called in at 11:50 a.m.

Morris said when firefighters from the Flanders Fire Department arrived at the scene, flames were shooting from the rear of the structure, then spread to the front of the home, completely gutting the property.

Morris said one woman was inside the home at the time. He said she was cooking when grease caught on fire. She attempted to put out the fire herself before she called 911 for help.

He said the unidentified woman lives in the home with her husband and three children.

The fire was declared under control at 12:27 p.m. Firefighters could be seen inside the home, using axes to look for hot spots and ventilate the roof.

In addition to the Flanders department, firefighters from Niantic, Old Lyme and Oakdale and the Old Saybrook FAST team also responded to the scene.

Morris said the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Upper Pattagansett Road is closed from Kensington Drive to Scott and Whistletown roads, according to East Lyme Public Safety.
