Nick Woviotis scholarships awarded to local students, graduates

The 30th annual scholarship awards in memory of Nicholas Woviotis were presented at a dinner Monday at the Italian Dramatic Club in New London.

The 2014 winners of the $2,000 scholarships were Jose Garcia of New London High School; Morgan Paige Brown of East Lyme High School; and Christopher C. Hersom Jr. of Waterford High School.

Garcia plans to attend Central Connecticut State in the fall; Brown is planning to go to Tulane University; and Hersom is planning to attend High Point University.

Prior recipients who are continuing their college education — Michael Patrick Doherty of Waterford High School; Mena Buscetto of St. Bernards High School; and Grant Pezzolesi of New London High School - each received a $1,000 award.

Gold watches donated by Mallove’s Jewelers were presented to prior recipients who completed their college education — Caroline Dempsey who graduated from Villanova University and Peter Bonnano who graduated from Southern Connecticut State University.

During the last 30 years, about $200,000 in scholarships have been granted, with 98 percent of the 37 prior recipients completing their educations and receiving degrees.
