State police are collecting used wheelchairs at barracks in eastern Connecticut and throughout the state Saturday for the Chariots of Hope organization.
The 15th annual “Day of 1000 Wheels,” with a goal of collecting 300 wheelchairs in one day, will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with representatives from Chariots of Hope on hand to accept the donations. Last year, state police collected more than 180 wheelchairs.
Locally, wheelchairs can be dropped off at Troop E in Montville, Troop F in Westbrook or Troop K in Colchester.
The organization refurbishes the wheelchairs and distributes them to people around the world. The organization says there are 20 million children and adults who could make use of wheelchairs that now sit idle in attics or basements.
