Montville - Fourth-seeded Montville High School was ousted from the CIAC Class M baseball tournament on Friday, losing 3-2 in 11 innings to No. 12 St. Joseph in the quarterfinals.
Nick Williams singled home Chris Kirven with two outs in the top of the 11th inning to take the lead, and Williams continued his strong relief pitching in the bottom of the inning to secure the win for the Cadets. Williams allowed one hit over the final six innings, striking out 10 with no walks and allowing only one baserunner to reach second base.
Montville's Chad Mooney was almost as good, allowing one run on five hits over eight innings of relief.
Buddy Dewaine (two hits) singled home Mooney in the fifth inning and later scored on an error for Montville (20-5), tying the game at 2-2. Montville stayed in the game by turning three inning-ending double plays.
In another game:
• Jason Staub pitched a five-hitter as No. 17 Portland advanced to the Class S semifinals with a 3-1 quarterfinal victory over No. 25 Old Lyme in a matchup of Shoreline Conference rivals.
Staub also douibled and tripled for the Highlanders, who play No. 21 Trinity Catholic in Tuesday's semifinals. Old Lyme, which finishes 11-13, scored its lone run in the sixth on a base hit by Trent Garbati while Dan Chapman doubled and Billy Buscetto had a hit and scored the Wildcats' run.
• Third-seeded Coventry ended No. 6 Wheeler's season, scoring four runs in the second inning en route to an 8-5 victory over the Lions in the Class S quarterfinals. After falling behind 4-0, Raven Houck launched a three-homer over of the fence in left-center to pull the Lions within 4-3, but Coventry (19-3) came right back with two in the bottom of the third and later opened an 8-3 lead before Wheeler scored twice in the seventh.
Houck finished with two hits for the Lions, who finish 16-6, while Kaite Morgan added a pair of singles and scored a run.
• Waterford's Shawn O'Loughlin, a senior at Pomfret School, was named to the Brine National High School All-American team and has been selected to represent a team of Connecticut stars at the Brine National Lacrosse Classic June 30-July 3 in Boyds, Md. The tournament features some of the top scholastic players in the country.
