First-class Cadet Brynna Cooke of Salem was one of five cadets who were named National Scholar-Athletes by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association in May.
The five cadets are from the Coast Guard women's rowing team and include seniors Cathy Durand and Judy Hooymans, juniors Elyse Bobczynski and Cooke and sophomore Emily Quallen.
In order to be on the team a student must have a 3.5 cumulative GPA or above, be in at least her second season of eligibility and have rowed in the institution's National Collegiate Athletic Association or Intercollegiate Rowing Association eligible boat for at least 75 percent of the current spring races or racing in a regional event, according to the United States Coast Guard Academy's website.
