Fire near Yale University leaves 1 dead

New Haven (AP) — New Haven's fire chief says one person has died and several people were injured in an early morning fire at a high-rise apartment building near the Yale University campus.

The blaze broke out after 4:30 a.m. Wednesday on the sixth floor of the 17-story University Towers building on York Street.

Chief Allyn Wright says three residents had to be transported to the hospital with burns or smoke inhalation and a male victim later died. Two firefighters also were treated for minor injuries.

Wright says 35 firefighters responded and put the fire out. They also used ladders and a cherry picker to rescue several people from balconies.

Several streets in the area were closed to give authorities access to the building, and the building's residents remained outside Wednesday morning.
