Mystic — The Charles W. Morgan’s departure from New London to Newport, R.I., has been rescheduled for Sunday at 6 a.m.
This leg of the Morgan’s 38th voyage was initially scheduled to begin on Saturday but has been delayed because of rough water conditions expected off of Point Judith, R.I., a statement from Mystic Seaport said.
"The cold front that is passing through will most likely leave the sea state in the area quite agitated, more so than we feel is appropriate for the Morgan,” said Dana Hewson, the vice president for watercraft preservation and program at the Mystic Seaport. “By delaying a day, we give the waters time to calm down.”
The decision was made in consultation with meteorologists at the National Weather Service.
Due to the change in plans there is a possibility that the Morgan will go through the Watch Hill Passage between Watch Hill and Fishers Island, instead of through The Race, before the ship reaches the Block Island Sound. The captain will make the final decision on Sunday morning, the statement said..
