A 19-year-old accused of confronting a Quaker Hill store clerk with a knife in April will make his first appearance next week in the New London court where major crimes are tried.

Joseph U. Williams, who was homeless at the time of his arrest, is being held in lieu of $99,000 at the Manson Youth Institution and is due in court Wednesday on charges of attempted first-degree robbery, third-degree assault and first-degree unlawful restraint.

According to a warrant affidavit prepared by Waterford Police, Williams attempted to hold up the Cumberland Farms store at 27 Norwich Road on April 16. The store clerk said a man wearing a black mask and wielding a knife approached her and made grunting noises as she worked in the store. She said she ran out of the store and the man followed her, grabbed her by the back of the jacket and raised the knife over her head. She said she yelled a curse at him and he pulled her onto the ground, causing her to hit the back of her head on the asphalt. The man fled and she called police.

While police were investigating, a clerk from another convenience store in the area reported that Williams was bragging about a $1,000 robbery he had committed, according to the affidavit. The police then spoke with a female friend of Williams’ who told them he borrowed her car on the day of the robbery and that she had found a knife in the car. She also said that she had recognized Williams in a surveillance photo from the robbery that Waterford police had posted on their Facebook page.
