Pfizer opens R&D hub in Cambridge, Mass.

Pfizer Inc. opened its new research-and-development hub at Kendall Square in Cambridge, Mass., on Monday.

The new 280,000 square-foot research site was built after the pharmaceutical giant decided in 2011 to move its drug-discovery unit from Groton to the Boston area to take advantage of being closer to top academic researchers. About 1,000 people, including scores who previously worked in Groton, will occupy the new R&D center.

Research units within the site study disease areas that include inflammation, immunology, rare disease, cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, and neuroscience. The new Pfizer site is led by Jose-Carlos Gutierrez-Ramos, a Pfizer group vice president.
