New London — Three lanes of Interstate 95 on the Gold Star Memorial Bridge were temporarily closed Wednesday evening in the wake of a one-car motor vehicle crash on the northbound side of the highway.
The vehicle involved appeared to have struck the concrete barrier on the right shoulder of the highway, according to New London Fire Department Battalion Chief Edward Sargent.
The fire department was called in to extinguish a small fire in the engine compartment of the vehicle. The driver was out of his vehicle when emergency responders arrived. The lone occupant was taken by ambulance to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
All lanes of traffic had reopened by 9:45 p.m., though the Department of Transportation was in the process of setting up for road construction on the Groton side of the bridge.
State police and the New London Fire Department were joined at the scene by the City of Groton Fire Department and L+M paramedics.
The Gold Star Bridge was the site of a fatal motorcycle accident on Monday that claimed the life of a North Stonington man.
