New London —Tyler Latham of Fitch High School and Ledyard's Joe Carter rank first and second, respectively, after the first day of the CIAC Decathlon Championship at the Coast Guard Academy.
Latham piled up 3,529 points through five of 10 events on Tuesday and Carter has 3,249 points. Foran's Nicholas Griswold is third with 3,121 points.
The two Eastern Connecticut Conference seniors battled through the first day. Carter won the 100-meter dash (11.41 seconds), 400 (49.79) and long jump (20 feet, 9 1/4 inches) while Latham took second in all three events, finishing in 11.70, 49.86 and 20-6 1.4, respectively.
Latham excelled in two field events, winning the shot put (44-7) and finishing second in the high jump (6-0), while Carter was 23rd in the former and tied for 21st in the latter.
Stonington's John Dipollino competed in four events, placing 21st in the 100 and 20th in the long jump while tying for 31st in the high jump and tying for 40th in the shot put.
The girls competed in the heptathlon, with Briana Burt of Maloney holding the lead through four events, scoring 2,435 points. Montville's Kiah Strickland is 13th with 1,947 while Montville's Abigail McAdams ranks 22nd (1,839) and Fitch's Brianna Robinson 34th (1,610). Fitch's Stephanie James is 39th (1,499).
In the 200, Strickland was 23rd, James 25th, Robinson 32nd and McAdams 41st.
Strickland placed 11th in the 100 hurdles while McAdams tied for 27th, Robinson 40th and James 48th.
In the high jump, McAdams tied for ninth at 4-8 1/4 while Robinson tied for 31st, James tied for 37th and Strickland placed 43rd.
Strickland was fourth (29-2 1/2) and McAdams fifth (29- 1/2) in the shot put while Robinson was eighth and James tied for 20th.
Two other girls' individual events also were held on Tuesday.
In the 2,000 meter steeplechase, Sabrina Olsen of Thomaston placed first in 7:23.64. Wheeler's Kelsey Melinosky was the top local finisher, taking 36th, while Fitch's Alana Olendorf was 37th and Montville's Abigail Baukus 39th. Stonington's Elise Huysman was 49th.
In the hammer throw, Stonington's Marissa Yambao placed eighth in 73-11.
New York-Penn League
• Justin Higley's first-inning grand slam propelled the Vermont Lake Monsters to a 5-0 win over the Connecticut Tigers before 2,195 at Centennial Field. Cristhian Perez scattered six hits over seven innings with five strikeouts to earn his first win of the season for Vermont (3-2).
Steven Fuentes had two hits for the Tigers (2-3), who play their home opener against Lowell tonight at Dodd Stadium, and Domingo Lebya doubled.
American Legion Zone VI
• Pieter Khoury pitched a five-hitter with five strikeouts to lead New London to a 2-0 win over Ledyard-Pawcatuck. Timmie Jackson and Jeremy Santos both had RBI singles for New London (5-3). Mike Dellaporta had two hits, including a double, for Ledyard (1-6).
SEC Babe Ruth
• Matthew McElwee singled and doubled, leading Ledyard past Waterford, 5-0, in the SEC Connecticut 16-18 Babe Ruth play. Evan August earned the win, striking out eight in four hitless innings. Aleks Gagnon doubled and Evan August, Andrew Gagnon and Eli Diamucski each had a single for Ledyard.
