Old Saybrook - Becker's Diamonds and Fine Jewelry held a ribbon-cutting Friday to celebrate the opening of its 14th location in Connecticut at the Old Saybrook Shopping Center.
The 1,300-square-foot store, called Becker's Estate Jewelers in a spot previously occupied by Oscar J & Company Jewelers, specializes in the sale of fine estate jewelry. It also will buy special pieces of jewelry as well as other items, such as watches, gold and silver flatware sets.
"It's a new concept," said John Hay, the store manager.
The idea, he said, is to offer financially strapped people with valuable pieces a place to sell their items and get immediate payment while giving store customers a deal that will typically save 50 percent off the price of a piece of jewerly if bought new.
"Some of these pieces you just can't find anymore," Hay added.
The store, on the Stop & Shop side of the shopping plaza, will refurbish old jewelry and offers a one-year guarantee on the pieces it sells.
Becker's flagship store is in West Hartford, but it also has locations in Norwich, Colchester, Bristol, Manchester and Newington where both buying and selling take place. Other stores are devoted strictly to buying items for their metal content or to be placed for sale at other Becker's locations.
Scott Becker, company vice president, said jewelry locations are generally in town centers or busy shopping plazas. The Old Saybrook store officially opened June 10, and has major sales going on through July 12.
Becker said the company, at www.beckers.com, has no immediate plans to expand further into southeastern Connecticut, but "we always keep our eyes and ears open for the possibilities."
