Adm. Allen returning to Coast Guard Academy
New London (AP) - Former Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Thad Allen is returning to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London to help develop strong military leaders.
Allen graduated from the academy in 1971 and was on the national spotlight directing the federal response to Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, and for his work in dealing with the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill. He retired in 2010. The Coast Guard Academy announced Friday that Allen is its next James S. Tyler Distinguished Chair in Leadership Development.
Allen will deliver an annual address at the academy and speak to each year's incoming class of cadets. He could also contribute to classroom instruction and coordinate opportunities to lead in emerging areas of national interest, including the Arctic and cyber security.
Allen will begin his duties later this year.
