Local roundup: Hill, Turnier lead Schooners past Westerners

Groton - Groton's Aaron Hill (UConn) and A.J. Turnier of Waterford (Southern Connecticut) helped lead the Mystic Schooners past the Danbury Westerners 5-1 in a New England Collegiate Baseball League game on Thursday night.

Hill had two hits, including a triple, with two RBI for Mystic (8-5) and Turnier allowed just four hits over six innings to earn the win. Dan Hoy (Princeton) added two hits, including a two-run home run, and scored twice.

A.J. Ryan (Dayton) had two hits and scored for Danbury (5-11).

NY-Penn League

• Michael Gerber went 3-for-4 - all doubles - with two runs and two RBI as the Connecticut Tigers beat the Vermont Lake Monsters 7-2 before 1,405 fans at Dodd Stadium. Ross Kivett singled, scored twice and drove in a run for the Tigers (7-7). Austin Pritcher scattered five hits over five innings with four strikeouts and an earned run to get his first win of the season.

Zone VI Legion

• Nick Clemons pitched 3 1/3 innings of no-hit relief as Montville defeated Jewett City 5-4. Clemons also had a double, triple and three RBI for Montville (5-8) while Steve Rogers was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored.

• Brenden Gayowski pitched a one-hitter and struck out five as Ledyard-Pawcatuck routed Norwich 11-1. Kevin Knowles had for hits for L-P, including a double.

District 10 LL baseball (9-10)

• Waterford defeated East Lyme 13-0 as Will Rocchetti had three hits, including a double and a three-run home run. Jabez White added three hits, Will Sutman had two hits, including a triple, Jordan Elci had a single and double and Preston Tabor had two hits.

• Mystic defeated East Haddam 13-2 as Timmy Lynch pitched a three-hitter and Cam McGugan had three hits, including two doubles, a grand slam and six RBI. Jason Erb also homered for Mystic while Nick Carney and Alex DelCampo each had two hits. Logan Nickerson doubled for East Haddam.

District 10 LL softball (11-12)

• Mystic defeated Salem/Bozrah/Lyme-Old Lyme 14-2 in four innings as Nora Ryan had three hits and four RBI, Olivia Carney had two hits and two RBI, Casey Flax had two hits and two RBI and Meagan Giwoyna had a double and three RBI. The win advanced Mystic to the championship round beginning today against either East Lyme or Waterford beginning at 5:30 p.m. at Pawcatuck. Caitlyn Sievers drove in two runs for Salem.

District 10 LL softball (9-10)

• Mystic defeated East Lyme 10-9 as winning pitcher Fiona Taber struck out 15, Ellie Korinek homered and Alli Cabral and Francesca Foster had two hits apiece. Lindsay Hatajik, Madison Sjostrom and Jennie Sherwood each had two hits for East Lyme.

• Pawcatuck defeated Salem/Bozrah 12-1 in four innings on Wednesday as Elaina Previty was the winning pitcher.
