Local roundup: Tigers, Schooners rained out
Soaking rains wiped out the small local schedule on Thursday.
The Connecticut Tigers' New York-Penn League baseball game against the Vermont Lake Monsters was postponed, and will be made up as part of a doubleheader Sunday at Dodd Stadium in Norwich, starting at 3:30 p.m.
The postgame fireworks were also rained out and the Tigers will now have fireworks shows after tonight's game and Sunday's second game. The team will also be having a Rajai Davis bobblehead giveaway tonight. The game begins at 7:05 p.m., and gates open at 6.
The New England Collegiate Baseball League game at Fitch High School in Groton between the Mystic Schooners and Plymouth Pilgrims was postponed to July 31. And the Zone VI American Legion baseball game between Danielson and Ledyard/Pawcatuck was rained out and will be made up as a doubleheader today at Stonington High School, beginning at 2 p.m.
• New London lost twice to teams from New York in the Hall of Fame Baseball Tournament at Binghamton, N.Y. New London fell to Horseheads 5-4 then Vestal 2-1. New London is 2-2 in pool play with a game left against Hadden Heights, N.J., today.
District 10 baseball (11-12)
• Pacey Steele pitched a no-hitter with 11 strikeouts as Mystic beat Lyme-Old Lyme 7-0 Thursday. Manish Rane-Castrodad had three hits, including a double, and scored twice, Sam Davis doubled and drove in a run and Giovanni Valentine singled, tripled and scored twice for Mystic. Parker Stone struck out seven for Lyme-Old Lyme.
• Robert Otanez struck out 10 and New London beat East Haddam 7-2 Thursday. Steve Cantres, Chris Medina and Otanez each went 3-for-4 for New London and John Linares homered for East Haddam.
• Jared Burrows struck out nine over 5 1-3 scoreless inning for the win as Waterford beat Montville 3-1 Thursday. Luke Sokolski finished up for the save and Sonny Pezzello hit a three-run homer for Waterford. Zach Southard homered, doubled and singled and Ryan Champlain singled and doubled for Montville.
