Groton - Stephen Laurino (Marist) went 4-for-5 and scored the go-ahead run as the Mystic Schooners beat the Ocean State Waves 6-5 in a New England Collegiate Baseball League game at Fitch High School Saturday night.
Laurino broke a 5-5 tie by scoring on a single by Brad Zunica (Miami). Louis Concato (Dartmouth) won in relief to improve to 2-0 and Jacob Hendren (Heartland CC) pitched two scoreless innings for his second save. Toby Handley (Stony Brook), Groton's Aaron Hill (UConn), Tyler Boyd (Seton Hall), Lou Ianotti (Quinnipiac) and Zunica had two hits each and Handley scored three runs for the Schooners.
Mystic (13-6) will play against today at Vermont (6:30 p.m.)
New York-Penn League
• Domingo Leyba and Steven Fuentes had three hits each as the Connecticut Tigers beat the Vermont Lake Monsters 4-2. Rashad Brown scored twice for the Tigers (10-11). Johan Belisario (1-0) picked up the win in relief and Joe Jiminez pitched the ninth to earn his second save.
American Legion Zone VI
• Ledyard/Pawcatuck was swept by Danielson, losing the opener 4-1 and the second game 7-5. Ryan Francis had two hits in the opener and Bryce Bedard and Connor Filbert had a single and double each in the second game for Ledyard/Pawcatuck (9-14).
District 6 Babe Ruth (15)
• Jake Gannon pitched four innings, allowing two hits, and got plenty of firepower from his offense as Waterford won 20-1 in five innings over Tri-County on the opening day of the tournament. Alex Petchark had a double and four RBI, Dan Castelpoggi a single and a triple and Cory Conderino a double and a triple for Waterford.
