East Lyme road rage incident leads to assault charges

East Lyme — A Niantic man is facing felony assault and others charges stemming from a suspected road rage incident in which police said he intentionally struck a motorcycle with his SUV and injured the motorcyclist.

Christopher R. Hollaway, 48, of 18 W. Main St., Niantic, turned himself in to police Friday to face charges of second-degree assault, first-degree reckless endangerment, third-degree criminal mischief and evading responsibility.

On the evening of June 27, police said Hollaway was operating a 2008 Toyota Highlander when he intentionally bumped the rear of a Harley-Davidson motorcycle operated by George Krawshuk Jr., 55, of Farmington while stopped at a stop light at Route 156, at the intersection of Route 161 in East Lyme.

When Krawshuk “reacted,” police said Hollaway again intentionally struck the rear of the bike, causing it to fall over. Krawshuk fell to the ground, striking his head and suffering serious head trauma.

Police said Hollaway left the scene, traveled onto Route 161 and pulled into the Niantic Fire Department. Police said they quickly detained him.

Krawshuk was taken for treatment of his injuries to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London.

An extensive investigation by East Lyme police was completed with help from the state police accident reconstruction squad and detectives from the Eastern District Major Crime Squad.

Police said they determined the incident was an intentional act.

Hollaway posted a $75,000 bond after his arrest and is due to appear July 25 at New London Superior Court.
