East Lyme – Three people were displaced following a blaze at a home at 27 Brainerd Road Sundayafternoon that badly damaged the single-family ranch.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire remains under investigation by the local and state fire marshal’s offices.

East Lyme Fire Marshal Dick Morris said part of the investigation involves analyzing remnants of a kitchen appliance which may have been the cause of the fire and was in the area where the fire is suspected to have originated. He declined to name the appliance.

Niantic and Flanders fire departments, with a rapid intervention team from Old Saybrook, responded to the fire at about 3 p.m. The fire was noticed by neighbors about 30 minutes after the three occupants of the home had left, Morris said.

The kitchen and roof above were severely damaged, Morris said, and much of the home suffered heat, smoke and water damage. The home is uninhabitable without major rehabilitation work, he said.
