Woman arrested at Mohegan Sun faces charges for theft of son's ashes

Mohegan — A woman arrested at Mohegan Sun on Sunday was wanted by Bridgeport police for allegedly stealing from a funeral home an urn containing her son’s ashes, police said.

Raisa Gonzalez, 21, of Bridgeport was charged Sunday after Mohegan Tribal police responded to a report of a disturbance in a parking garage at the casino, according to Mohegan Tribal Police Chief Jeffrey Hotsky.

Gonzalez and Edward Santos, 23, of Ansonia, each were charged with interfering with an officer after police said they initially tried to hide their identities. Both had arrest warrants.

Gonzalez was wanted for fifth-degree larceny, among other charges. Hotsky said contrary to some published reports, Gonzalez was not carrying the urn at the time of her arrest.

Gonzalez was wanted for fifth-degree larceny among other charges stemming from the theft of the ashes from the Luz de Paz Funeral Home in Bridgeport in February. Police said a couple, whose child was cremated at the funeral home, had left with the urn without paying for services.
