New London – City firefighters on Tuesday extinguished a fire at a two-family home at 7 Williams St. that displaced multiple residents.
Reported at about 6:25 p.m., fire was discovered on the second floor where it had damaged the kitchen and surrounding area, according to Battalion Chief Marc Melanson. The building sustained heavy smoke damage and some water damage. No injuries were reported.
No one was in the building when firefighters arrived and witnesses said neighbors called 911 when they noticed the smoke. Melanson said at least four people lived in the two apartments, though the exact number had not been determined. The Red Cross was notified and expected to help with emergency needs of the families and to provide a temporary place to stay.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the city fire marshal’s office.
Williams Street and a portion of Blackhall Street were temporarily closed while firefighters were on scene. New London was joined by a firefighter assistance team from the Naval Submarine Base Fire Department.
