Norwich – Police arrested two suspected thieves Wednesday and say they anticipate more arrests as they tackle the ongoing problem of copper piping being stolen from vacant homes.

Eric Vic, 29, of no certain address and Kevin Banta, 30, of 93 Georgia Road, Oakdale, each were charged following investigation into reports of copper piping taken from a vacant home on Joseph Perkins Road.

Police had set up 24-hour surveillance at the home following a burglary complaint. Sgt. Ed Peckham said patrol officers worked in collaboration with community policing officers and detectives.

Vic and Banta were seen in the area of Joseph Perkins Road Wednesday and were found in possession of burglary tools, police said. Both men were charged with possession of burglary tools, sixth-degree larceny, first-degree criminal mischief and third-degree burglary. Vic also was charged with possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle.

The ongoing investigation, Peckham said, has resulted in leads in numerous other burglaries in Norwich and surrounding towns.

Vic and Banta were held in lieu of $25,000 bonds and expected to appear today in Norwich Superior Court.
