Newtown — Waterford completed an improbable run through the New England Babe Ruth 13-year-old baseball tournament by sweeping Portland (Maine) 8-6 and 6-5 in the championship round on Thursday night.
The Connecticut champions, who lost their opening game in the double-elimination tournament, won five straight games and will now represent New England at the Babe Ruth World Series in Glenn Allen, Va. The World Series begins Saturday, Aug. 16.
Waterford won Thursday’s opener 8-6 as Max Adams had three hits and drove in two runs.
In the winner-take-all final game, Dylan Bosco went the distance and Waterford, which trailed 1-0 early, scored four runs in the fourth to take a 4-1 lead before holding off Portland in the seventh.
Bosco had a single and double while Adams had a big two-run single.
