New London — Police are investigating reports that at least five properties on Ocean Avenue, including Lawrence + Memorial Hospital, were vandalized with graffiti overnight.
Properties along Ocean Avenue were marked with “Tag z” and expletive "170”.
The graffiti appears to have started in the area of 280 Ocean Ave. all the way down towards the beach.
One tenant who lives at 280 Ocean Ave. said he got home at midnight and did not notice the graffiti. He said he doesn’t know what the words mean or if they even stand for anything.
“The cops spoke to me this morning and they said it happened in other parts of the city,” the man said who declined to give his name. “The words have no meaning to me.”
The main entrance of the hospital on Ocean Avenue was also targeted. An employee was power washing the “tag z” graffiti markings that were scrolled across at least 10 times on the cement gate.
Another homeowner on Ocean Avenue, who declined to give his name, said he briefly spoke to police this morning. He said he would paint over the graffiti.
“I don’t know if there’s a deeper meaning to it,” he said referring to the graffiti. “Or it’s stupid kids playing a prank.”
Police could not be reached for further comment at this time.
