East Lyme — Selectwoman Rose Ann Hardy and Selectman Rob Wilson on Wednesday announced their endorsement of Bill Satti for the 20th Senate District.
“As the longest serving Selectwoman of the Town of East Lyme, I am proud to add my name to his growing number of endorsements and supporters,” Hardy said in a statement. “For 30 years I have been a Selectwoman and a teacher for nearly 50. Bill Satti is the best Democrat to fill Senator Stillman’s seat, and I am proud to endorse him.”
Wilson added in a statement: “Bill Satti will be there for East Lyme. He has the experience, commitment, and drive to fight for us in Hartford, and he will bring new energy and ideas to the District. Bill Satti is clearly the best choice for East Lyme.”
The 20th District encompasses Bozrah, East Lyme, Montville, New London, Old Lyme, Old Saybrook, Salem and Waterford.
Satti, the New London Democratic Town Committee chairman, will face state Rep. Betsy Ritter, D-Waterford, in a primary next week. The winner of the primary will run against East Lyme First Selectman Paul Formica, a Republican, in the general election.
Satti’s campaign headquarters are in East Lyme.
“I am honored to receive the endorsement of such prominent, long-serving Democratic leaders, and I look forward to working with them,” said Satti in a statement. “Together, our voice will be very strong in Hartford. I am grateful to receive their support. Their support means a lot.”
The East Lyme Democratic Town Committee has endorsed Ritter for the seat, but its chairman, Ed Morris, is publicly supporting Satti.
Three members of the DTC’s executive committee, not including Morris, had called a special meeting for Wednesday — which was later canceled — to discuss mailed endorsements of Satti from Morris. DTC Vice Chairman Beth Hogan said the letters gave people the false impression that the entire DTC endorsed Satti.
One of the mailings is a July 24 letter endorsing Satti that Morris sent on DTC letterhead. Another mailing, a flier from Satti’s campaign, features a photo of Morris and a statement that reads: “I’m endorsing Bill Satti because he is the best Democrat to represent East Lyme.” The other side states: “East Lyme Democrats support Bill Satti.” It features a photo of Satti by an East Lyme sign and one of him next to Morris as Satti announced his candidacy at the Niantic Town Green.
Morris said on Monday the special meeting violates the DTC’s bylaws. He said Wednesday evening that the meeting was canceled because he refused to attend.
