Woman charged with drunken driving after she crashes car with her children inside

Ledyard — A local woman with a previous conviction for drunken driving was arrested Tuesday night for driving under the influence after police said she crashed her car into another vehicle.

Police said Elizabeth Whipple, 29, of 11 Elizabeth George Drive, Mashantucket, was driving with her two children at the time of the accident.

Police said Whipple was driving on Route 117 when she drove across the center line and crashed into a car driven by John Hobert of 1 Sable Drive, Ledyard. Hobert had one adult passenger in his car.

After an investigation, police discovered that Whipple had avoided using an ignition interlock device that had been installed in her vehicle. She was convicted in 2012 for driving under the influence.

Whipple also was charged with failure to drive right, avoidance of or tampering with an ignition interlock device and risk of injury to a minor.

Police reported minor injuries, but did not say who was injured.

She was released on a $10,000 bond, and is scheduled to appear in New London Superior Court on July 10.
