Model Yacht Regatta takes place at Mystic Seaport

Good things come in small packages: Yachts get the miniaturized treatment when Model Yacht Racing returns to Mystic Seaport today through Sunday. The J Class models, for instance, are 1/16 scale versions of J class yachts - ships that raced for the America's Cup in the 1930s. The hulls on these models usually measure between 7 and 8-1/2 feet, with masts anywhere from 8 to 10 feet.

Model behavior: The racing schedule is: J Class Regatta, 9:30 a.m.-noon and 1-4 p.m. today and Friday; East Coast 12 Regatta, same times, Saturday and Sunday. The events are hosted by the Mystic River Radio Sailors (AMYA CLUB #39) in association with the American Model Yachting Association.

What's the East Coast 12? Why, it's a scale model of one of the earliest 12 Meter Class boats. The EC12 Meter Class Region 1 Championships are being held at Mystic Seaport, where, in 2013, 19 boats competed for first place.
