Norwich Mayor Hinchey, state Sen. Osten take ice bucket challenge

Norwich – Mayor Deberey Hinchey and state Sen. Cathy Osten will get dumped on at 9 a.m. Monday in front of Norwich City Hall as part of the nationwide Ice Bucket Challenge to raise money for the ALS Foundation, which fights Lou Gehrig’s disease.

In the challenge – which has gone viral on social media and has lured top celebrities and political figures to participate – calls for someone to challenge another to endure a shower of ice water or donate money to the cause. Then that person challenges another to the same choice.

Hinchey said she was challenged by U.S. Rep. Joe Courtney, D-2nd District, and the mayor in turn challenged Osten.

The fundraiser has raised nearly $9.5 million from July 20 through Friday, and attracted 184,812 new donors, the association reported. Donations can be made at www.alsa.org.
