With the average child watching 35 hours of television a week, why not sign your child up for an enriching music, dance, or drama class and get those synapses stirring?

Parents can learn about Neighborhood Music School (NMS) classes and private lessons for young children and students of all ages at www.neighborhoodmusicschool.org. Private lessons begin the week of Monday, Sept. 8, and classes and ensembles begin the week of Monday, Sept 15.

A free community Open House on Sunday, Sept. 7 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. will offer live music, an instrument petting zoo, sample dance and early childhood classes, and the opportunity to meet faculty and try a free mini-lesson. Students can also register for classes on-site.

"We're very pleased to offer expanded classes this year to help students of all ages develop creative skills," said Noah Bloom, acting executive director. "Study in the arts teaches concentration, team work, and leadership skills."

New classes this fall include:

• Once Upon a Time, an introduction to musical theater based on a children's book, for ages five to six

• After-School on Audubon, for ages seven to 10, based on the popular Audubon Arts summer program, which teaches singing, movement, and acting and concludes with a live production

• The NMS Harmonics, a lively singing group for ages 11 to 14

• Acting Workshop, for adults who want to rekindle their passion for performing

For questions about private lessons, contact the NMS Placement Office at 203-624-5189, ext. 24 or cray@neighborhoodmusicschool.org. Send questions about group classes to ischimmer@neighborhoodmusicschool.org or call 203-624-5189, ext. 25.

Located at 100 Audubon Street in New Haven, NMS, established in 1911, is one of the 10 largest community arts schools in the country. NMS offers private music lessons on more than 30 instruments; group music classes; classical, rock, and jazz ensembles; and a Suzuki program. The school's dance program offers classes for adults and children in ballet, modern, tap, jazz, hip-hop, and yoga. NMS also offers a state-licensed, arts-based preschool for two-, three-, and four-year-olds. To learn more about NMS, visit www.neighborhoodmusicschool.org.

NMS programs are made possible in part with support from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Connecticut DECD Office of the Arts, and the Community Foundation for Greater New Haven, along with many other generous foundations and individuals.
