Grief and confusion follow Bristol stabbing

Bristol (AP) - A Connecticut mother whose 1-year-old daughter was stabbed to death at a relative's home in Bristol this week said she is devastated and searching for answers.

Shakyia Clay told reporters Thursday that she is frustrated police haven't told her the details of how her daughter, Zaniyah Calloway, was killed Monday. She also is upset that authorities haven't yet released her daughter's body so she can hold a service and bury her.

Clay said she is overwhelmed with grief and confusion.

"Why would you kill a baby? Why would you kill her?" Clay asked. "She was ... 1 years old. What possesses you to do something like that?"

Clay said she left Zaniyah and her 3-year-old son at a relative's house Monday while she went to a meeting. Her daughter was killed about an hour later.

A man police said was Zaniyah's uncle, Arthur Hapgood, 36, of Waterbury, has been charged with murder and other crimes. Authorities allege he stabbed the girl in the abdomen in his mother's house after getting angry during an argument with his wife. He is detained on $2.5 million bail.

Hapgood told police that he was high on "illegal drugs" and admitted to stabbing the girl, but he offered no explanation, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.

Hapgood's public defender declined to comment on the allegations. Messages were left with Bristol police Friday.

Clay said her life has been turned upside down. She said support from her family and the community is helping her get through the days.

"How do I sit here and tell my 3-year-old son that he isn't going to see his sister again?" Clay said. "It's just so hard. Just love your kids and just be careful who you leave them around.

"She's still here with me in my heart. I'm never going to forget about her," Clay said.

A candlelight vigil for Zaniyah was held Friday evening in Bristol.
