Growing up with programs like DARE, and the booths at local fairs where you could give your kids fingerprints, taught kids to trust the police. We were taught that the police are there to help.
By high school, I learned first hand that a badge alone didn't mean you should trust someone. And in my 20s, I learned countless times that a badge alone didn't mean someone cared to help you or your kids.
What do I teach my kids these days? Do I still teach them not to fear someone with a badge? And, who are they supposed to trust to help them should they need it? This is a sad world when you can't trust those meant to protect and serve you. Who can you trust to help your kids when you aren't there to do so?
