Technology is great, but so too writing

My reaction to the article, "It's never too soon to learn about technology in Lyme and Old Lyme," (Oct. 6), concerning introduction of computers as early as kindergarten, is fear that handwriting will be left by the wayside. It is much easier to click a letter on a keyboard than to struggle to control one's hand with pen or pencil. But in the process of learning to write, there is a vital connection to the brain which does not occur in typing. If this whole generation of kids misses out on that eye-hand-brain connection it will be a real loss.

Articles in the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, and Psychology Today, and other publications, describe in more detail how differently the brain connection to writing works.

For more information one can just "Google" the words "handwriting brain connection." Parents, grandparents, and the general public should be aware of this new trend and make sure that handwriting is still a big part of the early elementary school years.
