Nine people in Connecticut have been quarantined by the state for possible exposure to Ebola, the state Department of Public Health said Thursday.

The state was notified by federal authorities about the individuals, who had traveled recently to one of the countries in West Africa affected by the Ebola epidemic, Bill Gerrish, spokesman for the state health department, said. The people were screened at an entry point at one of the five airports where travelers from Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone are permitted to enter this country.

Gerrish said that the department reviewed the cases of each of the people and determined, based on travel history and potential points of exposure, that a quarantine was warranted.

None of the nine people, who are not being identified, are sick and they are not a risk to the public, he said. The nine people will be in quarantined in their homes for 21 days, when they will be monitored by public health officials, he said.

According to news reports, six of the nine people are members of a family who live in West Haven.

The individuals will be contacted daily by the local health department to monitor their health, including recording their temperatures, Gerrish said.
