Bone marrow donors sought for Groton man with lymphoma

Groton — A bone marrow drive will take place from 2 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the Groton Municipal Building to try save the life of Mark Grabherr, a wastewater treatment plant operator and lifelong resident of Groton.

Grabherr, who graduated from Fitch High School in 1983, has faced life-threatening illness three times. He was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 1985, recovered, and fought the disease again in 2004.

He has now been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and needs a stem cell transplant, but there is no match for him on the national marrow donor registry. A match could provide a cure for the illness.

People are urged to get tested to determine whether they would be a match for Grabherr. The test entails having the inside of the cheek swabbed and filling out paperwork. Those who wish to join the national registry will pay no out-of-pocket costs. It typically costs about $100 to add each potential marrow donor to the “Be The Match” registry, but costs will be covered by health insurance and Michael’s Fund of Fall River, Mass.
