Shelly 'Shelito's Way' Vincent takes Universal Boxing Federation women's super bantamweight title

Newly crowned Universal Boxing Federation super bantamweight world champion Shelly "Shelito's Way" Vincent mingles with friends and associates Saturday as she attends the 10th annual Connecticut Boxing Hall of Fame gala at Mohegan Sun the night after winning her title.

New London’s Shelly “Shelito’s Way” Vincent took the world championship belt in the Universal Boxing Federation super bantamweight title fight against rival Jackie Trivilino. Vincent maintained her unbeaten record with the majority-decision win at the Twin River Event Center in Lincoln, R.I., Friday night.

Friday night was the first time female boxers have headlined the main event in a New England professional boxing match, according to Vincent’s assistant manager and strength coach Kim Gifford.

Vincent was hoisted in victory by her entourage and her first words were “Where’s my mother?” Gifford said.

Vincent has credited her mother’s death from leukemia when she was young as a catalyst in her boxing career, and carries a two-foot-high laminated poster of her mother into the ring as a pre-fight ritual.

Following Friday night’s win, Vincent kissed the photo and announced, “This is for you, Mom.”

Vincent attended the Connecticut Boxing Hall of Fame 10th annual gala induction ceremony Saturday night at Mohegan Sun to honor this year’s recipients, who include Peter Manfredo Jr., her manager’s son.

Mayor Daryl Justin Finizio presented Vincent with a ceremonial “key to the city” Oct. 29 on the steps of City Hall. Vincent said during that event that the city has always been in her corner.

“Being born here and growing up here, it means a lot for me to represent here and bring it all back here,” she said.

Vincent autographs a boxing glove for an admirer Saturday at the Connecticut Boxing Hall of Fame event.
