New London police charge man in attempted robbery
New London — Police arrested a New London man Tuesday for allegedly trying to rob a local convenience store at gunpoint.
Kirk Skinner, 49, of 9 Pearl St., No. 3, was charged with attempted first-degree robbery and criminal possession of a firearm.
The unsuccessful robbery occurred shortly after 4 a.m. Tuesday, when Skinner walked into the DB Mart, also known as Ravi Mart, at 268 Bank St. with a mask covering his face, police said.
Police said he demanded cash and threatened the clerk with a handgun. The clerk refused the request and even grabbed the handgun during a confrontation behind the counter, store surveillance video shows.
Store video also reveals that once he was without a gun, the suspect removed his mask and can be seen talking with the two patrons in the store. Police have identified the two patrons as witnesses.
Police said Skinner was taken into custody at his home and said they have recovered the mask used in the robbery. The entire incident remains under investigation.
