    St. Joseph routs Ledyard 37-7 to win Class M-Small title

    New Britain – Mufasha Abdul Basir rushed for 205 yards and two touchdowns as second-seeded St. Joseph routed No. 1 Ledyard 37-7 to win the Class M-Small state championship football championship on Saturday at Willow Brook Park.

    The Cadets broken the game open with 16 quarters in the fourth. They capitalized on a fumbled punt and extended their lead to 24-7 when Marc Morozek kicked a 28-yard field with 10:03 remaining before Lars Pedersen ran three yards for a touchdown with 5:42 to play and Morozek picked off a Ty Ebdon pass and returned it 42 yards for a TD just 1:28 later.

    Ledyard, after trailing 21-0, scored with 1:20 left in the first half when JoJo Shumaker took a screen pass from Ebdon and turned it into a 34-yard touchdown. Shumaker finished with 95 rushing yards on 20 attempts while wide receiver Phyllip Thomas had five catches for 103 yards.

    Basir has scored on runs of 91 and 31 yards for the Cadets, the second TD coming with 4:48 left in the first half.

    Cory Babineau added a 32-yard touchdown pass to Pedersen on a third and 21 play in the second quarter for St. Joseph (12-2), which won its second straight state title and fourth in six years. Ledyard finishes 12-1.
