Food donation demand continues to grow

This year marks the 25th anniversary of The New London Food Coalition (New London Food Bank). Three days a week an all-volunteer team hands out food to those in need. Under the outstanding dedication of Sara Chaney, the food is picked up at the Gemma Moran Food Bank weekly. This involves loading trucks and moving the food to the OIC Building in New London where the volunteers hand it out to the needy. We are very lucky to include fruits and vegetables in addition to nonperishable food. In November 2013 we were able to feed 339 families. One year later the clients (families) we served (October 2014) jumped to 588.

The need for this program is quite apparent. We work out of a small space in the OIC Building. We are able to pay the rent only through donations and grants.

We also advise people about proper nutrition. We go so far as providing them with recipes for cooking their food. Our clients are very appreciative, and from my end of being able to serve them it is truly a fulfilling and spiritual experience. Let us make 2015 a year where those in need do not go hungry.
